If your child was harmed on Roblox, you are not alone. Families across the country are suing Roblox right now, saying the app put their kids in danger and the company did not do enough to stop it.
Here is what these lawsuits are about, what kinds of harm they cover, and how to know if you can sue Roblox too.
What Are Families Suing Roblox For?
Families are suing Roblox because predators used the app to reach their children. The lawsuits say Roblox knew predators were using the app to find kids, and the company did not put real safeguards in place to stop it.
Parents in these cases are saying things like:
Adults messaged their child through Roblox and groomed them over weeks or months
Their child was asked for explicit photos or videos
Their child was pressured to move conversations off Roblox to apps where it was harder for parents to see what was happening
They reported the predator to Roblox and the company did nothing, or the predator just made a new account
Pressure on Roblox has come from multiple directions. Roblox agreed to pay $23 million to settle child safety investigations brought by the attorneys general of Alabama and West Virginia. Nebraska's attorney general has also sued Roblox over child safety concerns. And hundreds of parents have asked Roblox to stop trying to block their lawsuits and let their cases be heard in court.
How Does Roblox Make It Easier for Predators to Reach Kids?
Several things about how Roblox is built come up in these lawsuits.
Chat features. Roblox lets users send each other messages and talk in real time during games. Predators use those chats to start conversations with kids who do not know them.
Avatars. Avatars make it easier for an adult to seem like another kid. A grown man pretending to be a 12-year-old looks the same as a real 12-year-old when they are both blocky cartoon characters.
Robux and gifts. Predators use the app's currency to send gifts to kids. Small gifts can build a sense of friendship and obligation, which is often part of how grooming works.
Easy account creation. Anyone can make a Roblox account in minutes without proving who they are. When an account gets banned, the same person can come right back under a new name.
The lawsuits say Roblox could have made these features safer, and chose not to. We covered the broader question of whether apps like Roblox can be held legally responsible in a separate piece.
What Kinds of Harm Do These Lawsuits Cover?
The lawsuits cover serious harm to children, including:
Grooming. A predator builds trust with your child over time, then turns the relationship toward something sexual or exploitative.
Sexual exploitation. A predator pressures or coerces your child into sending explicit photos or videos, or sexually explicit conversations.
Off-platform abuse. A predator uses Roblox to meet your child, then moves the contact to other apps, or in the worst cases, in person.
Child sexual abuse material. A predator creates, shares, or trades explicit content involving your child.
You do not have to prove Roblox itself hurt your child. The lawsuits focus on whether Roblox made it easier for the predator to reach your child, and whether the company should have stopped it.
Can You Sue Roblox?
You may be able to sue Roblox if your child was groomed, exploited, or sexually abused by someone they met on the app. Every situation is different, and an attorney can tell you whether what happened to your child fits the lawsuits being filed right now.
If you are a parent or legal guardian, you can file on behalf of your child. If you were harmed on Roblox as a child and are now older, you may still be able to file depending on the laws in your state.
What matters in your case is the connection between what happened to your child and how Roblox worked, including what features were used, what your child reported, and what Roblox did or did not do in response.
What Should You Save?
If you think you may have a case, hold onto anything that shows what happened. Helpful things include:
Messages, usernames, and account names of the person who hurt your child
Screenshots of conversations or in-game chats
Any messages that moved to other apps like Discord, Snapchat, or Instagram
Records of any reports you or your child made to Roblox
Notes about when things happened and what was said
Medical, counseling, or therapy records related to the harm
Save what you can as soon as you can. Some of what happens on Roblox does not stick around forever, and the sooner records are kept, the better. We have a full guide on what to do if your child was exploited online that walks through every step.
